In the Studio

It’s always fun to find and shoot with creative kindred spirits. I honestly don’t remember how Sie and I got connected first. I’m pretty sure it was through social media but I don’t remember how it happened or who reached out first. Either way, I’m glad it did and we’ve had the chance to shoot together several times now (a quick glance at my IG feed will confirm this!).

A few weeks ago, Sie reached out and told me that she often uses a studio space to rehearse some of her music and - being a musician myself - this seemed like a perfect time to connect and shoot a few photos of her in her element: singing, dancing, and just having fun. We spent a couple hours there, capturing some cool photos with some microphones and instruments, lip syncing to some great music, and literally jumping around.

Sie’s energy is always great - she’s so much fun to work with - but there was something cool about the way she came to life in this space. I got to hear a little of the story as to why this particular studio has come to mean so much to her and I’ll just say that it makes a lot of sense why she loves this space. And, in usual Sie fashion, there were some fun ideas that she through out there and we tried our best to capture.

Like the skeleton mask.

It’s also super fun to shoot in a space you’ve never shot before and see what’s lying around to use for props or to add cool light effects. This studio had some great bean bags and some killer emoji pillows that Sie made great use of.

One of my favorite memories of the day was when we were first playing with the bean bags and trying to figure out how exactly we wanted to use them. I asked Sie if should could stand in a position for a second while I checked some lighting stuff - not expecting much other than a throwaway shot. I look up and Sie strikes this great, fun pose that definitely made the final cut.

Sie looked at the time and realized we were coming near the end of our session and says, “We HAVE to do a jumping shot!” Evidently, when she would come to this studio as a kid, she would often run and jump on the bean bags. So, OF COURSE we had to capture these moments. We made it fun, with her ukulele in her hand like she was late for a gig.

Thanks, Sie for an(other) awesome shoot! Let’s do it again sometime.
